I also have to say Man Although the mosquito does do an excellent job as well. Malaria causes about 350–500 million infections in humans and approximately 1.3–3 million deaths annually[1] — this represents at least one death every 30 seconds. The vast majority of cases occur in children under the age of 5 years,[2], and pregnant women are also vulnerable. The death rate is expected to double in the next twenty years.[3] Precise statistics are unknown because many cases occur in rural areas where people do not have access to hospitals and/or the means to afford health care. Consequently, many cases are undocumented.[3]

Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 85–90% of malaria fatalities,[4] but it is also prevalent in northern South America and South and Southeast Asia.

The geographic distribution of malaria within large regions generally considered malarial is complex, and malarial and malaria-free areas are often found close to each other.[5] Malaria is more common in rural areas than in cities; this is in contrast to dengue fever where urban areas present the greater risk. For example, the cities of the Philippines, Thailand and Sri Lanka are essentially malaria-free, but the disease is present in many rural regions. By contrast, in West Africa, Ghana and Nigeria have malaria throughout the entire country, though the risk is lower in the larger cities.

This is more likely what your teacher wants.

The hippo, found today throughout sub-Saharan Africa, is considered by many experts, explorers and Africans to be the most dangerous animal in Africa (not counting the mosquito). Crocodiles and cape buffaloes are badasses, too, but nobody seems to have kept an actual body count for any of these species and they don't have belts to notch. They've all killed way more people than Africa's lions have. (A few rogue tigers have killed a lot of people too, but they live in India, not Africa.) The hippo is extremely aggressive, unpredictable and unafraid of humans, upsetting boats sometimes without provocation and chomping the occupants with its huge canine teeth and sharp incisors. Most human deaths occur when the victim gets between the hippo and deep water or between a mother and her calf. I've read descriptions of their ground-rumbling charges--bellowing loudly, swinging their heads like giant sledgehammers, the massive open mouth with slashing teeth and I'm thinking, "This little safari is taking a bit of a bad turn, Elliot."

Luciani is onto something: I say the mosquito.

Malaria killed almost 750,000 children in Africa in the year 2000, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Hippos are extremely territorial despite their slothful appearance. They are the number one killer on the Nile, for sure, and maybe in all of Africa.

It's true, the hippopotamus. They are very territorial and lurk in swamps and quicksand areas where an unknowing person can fall to prey quite easily.
A friend told me that the other day...pretty crazy, huh?
