Ahhh, memories of my younger days. On a couple (okay, maybe a few more than a couple) of occasions this has happened to me. As for what ran through my mind, it differed for each occasion. I know I definitely thought immediately, do I have a warrant for me..........my son...........someone who is here? My next thought back in the "ol' days" might have been, "Damn, what's out on the table!"
Ironically, I now work as a Bail Bond Agent and if this happened now I would probably think that the cop was being nice and taking the inmate directly to me to write the bond so he can get right out of jail. Truthfully, however, I have never heard of a cop being that considerate.
The important thing when a cop is at your door is not what you are thinking, but what you are saying. Advice: SAY NOTHING!

...that someone died. It happened to me 4 years ago. It was the State Police telling me one of my sons had committed suicide.
