what is the engine component called that kicks up the idle when you turn the A/C on?

also, the refrig unit does not cool as quickly as it should, which i'm sure is direct result of the above. has anyone else run into this problem and do you think there is a way to insulate the unit as I'm told it is poorly designed as it is exposed to so much heat under the engine. thanks for any input

high idle soleniod and it should kick the base idle up about 200 to 300 rpm or so. well your system could be low as im sure its still an R12 system and the good thing about that old of a system is it still work when low. Now if its low its time to chose if you should change it to r134a or not. if that compressor has an belly on the bottom of it it cant be retrofitted, you will have to change that compressor, you can still get that design to keep it original looking but it will be built for r134a. as for insulating it, none will be needed as they worked well just as they are

You have carberated vehicle so that would be a high idle solenoid on your quadrajet carburator.

In regards to your AC you have a very old vehicle one thing i would be concerned with is all the trash that naturally develops inside your Evaporator box there could be a lot of trash on it reducing its effectiveness to cool your cabin in your vehicle.

You didn't mention if you have the tools or if you have had it converted to 134a refrigerant yet .

So i cant tell if its full on a charge or what is wrong. hope this helps.
