St. Louis is divided up into St. Louis City & St. Louis County (the suburbs). It is one of only a few cities in the U.S. which is divided in such a manner, with separate police forces and municipal governments. The separation began in 1876, although some joint funding and asset management exists between the two municipalities.

St. Louis, Missouri is unique in the fact that it's the only "major" city that isn't apart of a county. St. Louis City and St. Louis County are two completely different entities. i'm from st louis and it is divided up into several counties as well as there is a st.louis county which has different names also ,Its a little different than most cities i've been to in the midwest

st. louis is in st. louis county. st.charles is in st. charles county. north, west and south are all PART of ST. LOUIS COUNTY.
