I work in a chemical plant and years ago the safety people told us not to wear contact lenses when welding as it can cause damage to the eyes. If I'm not mistaken that has been disproved but our safety department still doesn't allow it as a matter of policy. Of coarse you don't even want to look at a welding arc without a welding hood. You can get arc burn which is very painful. It feels like someone has pored sand all over your eyeballs.

Are you talking about arc welding? Keep the contacts away from your eyes. That's why those guys were goggles or a helmet.

Think about it. Contacts are a plastic type material. If it gets hot enough to melt the contacts to your eyes, there is a good chance it's going to burn the skin right off your face. And it its going to do all that, it is most likely going to damage your retinas.

Wear the correct protective eyewear like you're supposed to and you won't have to worry about it.

I have heard that, to be on the safe side please wear the goggles. My dad has burnt his eyes really bad before when the sparks hit his face and eyes.
