It doesn't have to be. Just remember to eat right and exercise. The freshman 15 is usually gained due to kids being away from home for the first time and are able to eat when and what they want....like late night pizza, etc.

I didn't gain it until I graduated and started working a desk job...but a lot of people do gain it freshman year, that's why it's called that.
