I have a classic cotton tie tote and it is quite dirty. I know the tag says it is machine safe, but will it damage the bag at all, would I be better off hand washing it?

I would wash it in cold water on gentle with mild detergent. Do Not put it in the dryer-- it will shrink!!!

If the tag says it's machine safe, then you should be fine. However, if you're nervous, put it in the delicate or cold cycle. If the material is soley cotton, you should be fine since cotton is pretty resilient. And, to be honest, your bag isn't going to shrink. It's Vera Bradley, have some expectations for quality.

yes, you can wash a Vera Bradley bag in the washing machine. Just be careful to not use too much detergent or it will fade, and if your purse has one of the cardboard bottoms covered in fabric, take it out first.
