The worker create a new one. Several immature larvae are given royal jelly, a secretion produced by young worker bees. The larvae then develop into queens. The first queen to hatch generally finds and destroys her rivals before they can hatch.

The queen makes princesses throughout her life. Usually, these princesses fly off to make hives of their own. When the queen dies, one of her daughters doesn't fly off and is instead promoted.

The workers never get a holiday. They have to constantly forage so that they may have enough resources to keep the colony going. The queen doesn't really "boss" the workers around, either. Actually, she's kind of silly. She mostly wanders around, inspects cells, lays eggs, and gets fed (that's right... the workers feed her... she doesn't eat on her own). The workers keep doing what they do to maintain the colony. Drones are on permanent holiday - pretty much their entire life is spent hanging out in the hive doing nothing.
