There appear to be two sides to these answers and I think they are both correct. Jealousy is natural and I have seen it exhibited in animals allot. Call it the drive to thrive in a very competitive world.
On the other hand excessive jealousy is rooted in insecurity, though I think everyone is insecure to some degree whether we admit it or not. When someone is so jealous that they become controlling or hurtful it is definitely not natural as much as fear induced from lack of self worth. As with anything a little is normal and OK, but allot is bad.

Its a natural thing. They want what you have. Some people may say they are not jealous but its an emotion and once you have it, you cannot destroy. You could possibly change some of them such as fear. And you can change jealously by satisfying yourself with somehting and you beilive is better than what made you jealous in the first place.
Its a humanly thing that cannot be destroyed but changed. Sometime sI suppose

Because some people wish they had whatever the other person has, and if they can't get it they might get a lil jealous.

Mostly insecurity, sometimes it's about control. You want to control who can be be his friend and most of the time, you don't want it to be the opposite sex, so that, you don't get jealous. You get jealous for not knowing what he/she is up to. Because of insecurity, you want to control.

Because they have no self esteem, they are basically afraid and are insecure with themselves so everything is a treat. Just remember if the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence it's probably AstroTurf

It stems from our insecurities. You always feel that you are not good enough, pretty enough, interesting enough... etc therefore your partner (or even friends) are looking around for better people to hook up with. So automatically when they are just talking to somebody else you see that person as a threat.
