It's very important to think about safety in a lab. You probably don't want to be chemically burned or be killed in an accident if you didn't follow safety protocols. It's not impossible to remove all accidents but they can be reduced.

I don't know why, you are the only one who can tell that for you self, but i can assure you that the atmosphere we breath outside the lab is still safe and sound. maybe, in a hundred of years from now, it is important to be safe in the lab to experiment the atmosphere outside the lab.

If you haven't found the answer yet I presume that you have never had in a lab before. And for your own safety and the others safety, too, it's better not to enter one either. But if you choose to do that keeping asking about the safety rules in labs, then ... good luck. And be prepared for a long stay in a hospital ... or in a morgue.

It's important but you have to always weigh the safety factor against the fact that only risk-takers make the important discoveries. What's your choice? Safe at home with a Scotch or a posthumous Nobel Prize?
