I was a pit percussionist (and yes, I was a malleteer) in high school, too. I was wrangled in when the music teacher noticed that I was a pianista who could sight read.

Are you looking for a cheer for your section? Holler, "We've got more sound per pound than any pit around!" or try, "You got da beat, we got da melody!"

A lot of our pit crew doubled on drums, so it can be hard to retain your identity as an auxiliary percussionist. The fact that you're "auxiliary" says volumes about the sort of "helper, but not leader" role pit plays in the marching band.

But if all else, you can always rub it in to the other players that you don't have to march.
