Well, it all depends on what is faulty..

Assuming the drivers are good and the cables are good (you get the no issue with another ethernet adapters in 2 different devices connected), you have to consider the ethernet socket as being an issue on the card or the other device.

If the ethernet socket is bad, you are going to get media disconnected.

This is what I would do to confirm (most could be a repeat but will break it down):

1) Confirm driver is picking up and device is working "properly" in the OS
2) Connect Ethernet Cable and check if there is any network activity light blinking on the card (or hub light, etc.)
3) If still not lighting up (or not present) and media still disconnected, flip the cable ends (4 twisted pair has wire going where 4 of them goes one direction and the other goes other way; assuming if the cable is good, try to flip to ensure cable is given all options)
4) Try another cable and see if any results come from it
5) Swtich ethernet end of one of the device (hub, go to another port, etc.) to ensure your other device is not the cause
6) Connect the other device to another computer with ethernet card that is working and test. If passed, the likely issue is the physical ethernet socket (copper connections are bad or getting poor conduction)

If youve tried different cables then the chances are that its not them. Check the link lights on the back of each card when the cable is connected. If it is solid (usually green or amber) then you have a connection.

There could be a fault with one of your network cards but the chances are that this would have shown up in device manager. If you have a spare card try using it instead or try your existing network card in another machine that you know works on a network.

Have you tried to ping between machines?

In assuming that you are trying to just connect two computers together you need a crossover cable and not a straight through cable. Also assign static IP addresses to each machine, for example 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 (I wouldnt use 192.168.0.1 as its often used by wireless routers for setup). Make sure that the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0 .

Another thing to check is that they are in the same workgroup. XP Pro and XP Home assign computers to different workgroups. Think of a name (for example your own) and use this as the workgroup name.

If none of the above works then the chances are you have a conflict somewhere. If this is the case, try removing other PCI cards and try again.

Im afraid its just a trial and error exercise!

ok, assuming the cable is sweet and the link gentle is on, on your community card and also you probably did attempt yet another cable and also you probably did examine your community card is fantastic and also you've the right drivers on your community card... ok, end pulling out your hair now, take a deep breath, the position does the different end of the community cable plug into? a router, a dsl/cable modem or yet another computer? Did you reset (power off-power on) the different gadget? Is the link gentle on the different gadget on? If each little thing tests out ok and also you're nevertheless getting that mistakes and also you're utilising win xp, there is an excellent characteristic in XP which could help you (it has worked for me many situations) flow to the administration panel (in classic mode) double click on community connections, locate the icon for community section CONNECTION, do an actual click on it and choose restore from the pop up menu.... If after checking all issues and it nevertheless does not artwork, i'd advise scanning for viruses or Trojans... as this stuff can intervene with networking.... do not worry you receives it fixed !!!!!

Everytime I have seen this it is a bad Network card. If you are sure all cables are plugged in than I would try a different card. Seen it too many times after a storm.

There is a Link light that suppose to light up if the cable plugged and not faulty; check it first.
