There are two kinds of words that we have to learn. Those that are phonetic and can be sounded out, and those that we need to memorize because they are unusual called 'sight words'. If we don't know the rules for phonics and try just to memorize all the words as sight words,, we reach a limit on how many words we can memorize. The phonics rules find words that have something in common, and that we can sound out and so even if we don't remember them we can figure them out easily.

so phonics starts out simply with 3 letter words like,, hat, mat, tap... and then we learn the silent 'e' rule.. and come up with hate, mate, tape,,, then we learn combinations like ship and chip,,, and meet and meat. They are easier to remember that way,, and also the rules , as someone mentioned like "i after e except after c". Then you only have to memorize words like 'said' 'give'.

A syllable is a part of a word that has a vowel in it and a separate sound. Say each one as a part and go part by part .. for example:

everybody is ev er y bod y; understand is un der stand; memorize is me mo rize

another thing that helps is to stay calm,, don't panic... when we get nervous it is harder to think. Some kids freeze up. Stay calm and sound it out, or let your brain just do its thing. Some kids are thinking.. "oh, I can't do this! It's too hard! " and they get too upset to be able to think. so just stay calm,,, do your best, and if you've done your studying,,, it will come back to you.

The other part of it is to go over them every day. The first day you can look at them and say them. The second day you try to do them without looking, but you can look if you need to. The third day it should be easier. Write each one down 3 times. The fourth day, if the test is on Friday, ask someone to drill you. This means you really can't look cuz they have the book. Using them in sentences does help, like they do in spelling bees.

The best way to retain words to 1) to spell out the word by hand correctly- several times 2) say the word out loud correctly 3) write a sentence with that word. 4) Have someone quiz you on that word. Spend at least 10 - 15 minutes doing this every night before you go to bed. Pretty soon you will be able to remember the word.

Reading is the best way to learn to spell, we retain more detail when we see something written or printed.
You could try to break the word up to one, two or three syllables.
Practice spelling, is the best way to go. Make a game of it, so that they can be challenged by learning. We learn better if the subject is fun to do.

Think of a little song to remember... well actually I can't say anything that's worked for me because I'm in the Gifted And Talented Education (or GATE) program.... The lowest I've ever gotten is like a 27/30... My school does a pretest on Monday, then reviews the words in the homework throughout the week, finishing with a test on Friday... Oh, and another really good thing that I do is in my mind, I think of the word as it looks phonetically... Like in my mind "could" is like "COOLED" or something... and "apparent" I think of as "a parent" but with a double p..... I really hope that helps, if not, talk to the teacher, she's here to help.

Everybody previously had good suggestions but don't forget to use the phonics rules. I before E except after C (example; piece), I,E or Y after a C or a G makes the C or G sound soft(example; city). plus many more. Talk to the teacher if you don;t have a list of these to help your 3rd grader. These rules will help you the rest of your life when it comes to spelling. As you can see by being on this website, a lot of people don't know how to spell properly and it makes them look stupid.

My Mom would make me write each word 25 times... Tedious, absolutely. But instead of verbally spelling the word, the repetition made me remember when it came time to writing it on a test

It always helped me to write the word, sound it out, spell it out loud and then use it in a sentence both verbally and written.
