I believe a common noun is any person, place or thing that isn't capitalized. For example, 'city' is a common noun but 'Rome' is a proper noun.

The important thing to remember is that common nouns are general names. Thus, they are not capitalized unless they begin a sentence or are part of a title. Proper nouns, those that name specific things, are the class of nouns that require capitalization.

Like the song says, "A noun's a person, place, or thing".
Seriously, a proper noun would be like "Mr. Jones" or "Hilton". The common noun for the same would be "man" or "hotel".
A proper noun is very specific, while a common noun is not.

All nouns are either common nouns or proper nouns. So a common noun is basically everything that isn't a proper noun.
Common nouns refer to GENERAL things, eg. soft drink, country, person. Proper nouns refer to SPECIFIC things, eg. Pepsi, Brazil, David. Proper nouns are the ones that are usually capitalised.

A common noun is a word that names a person, place or thing, but not a specific one. Lea A explained it well! We capitalize proper nouns (the names of the specific ones, such as Paris, Nikes, President Bush), but common nouns are more general and not capitalized (city, shoes, leader).
