In order to view all of the Alt + xxxx combinations, see your character map, which in XP Professional can be found in Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools.
In this case, the "Regstered Trademark"symbol can be achieved in any windows based word processor by pressing Alt + 0174.
It will not work in Internet Explorer, test it out in Microsoft Word or Notepad.

If you want to get the symbol on the web using an HTML based format, type the following without any spaces in between: & #174;
Here it is without the space between the ampersand and the # sign:

In MS word all you need to do is go to Insert>Symbol, and go find the Symbol. You can also create a short cut key as well.

Those are ASCII characters
hold down alt then the coresponding number
http://www.petefreitag.com/cheatsheets/ascii-codes/
It' used to be in Win98 that you could create a directory in DOS (with ascii) that windows could not read - windows explorerer could not open it.
You could hide stuff there!
