The United Kingdom is the collective name given to the three countries of England, Wales and Scotland and to a part of Ireland - namely Northern Ireland.
England, Scotland and Wales are known collectively as Great Britain (Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain).
It's a bit like the US but instead of a union of 50 states it's a union of 4 countries. And just as each state in the US has it's own capital so too do the countries of the UK. Likewise, just as the US has Washington as it's national capital, the UK has London as it's national capital.
