Bird had skills and plenty of ideas in his playing (and is a total artist), but is he enjoyable to listen to?

I think he is enjoyable to listen to. I see your point about new listeners; they have been raised with a less adventurous form of jazz, I think. Same goes for Miles--Bitches Brew might scare younger jazz fans, but if it's given time, it's fantastic.

Some music that is classified as jazz now, shouldn't be. He was of an era when they had class and style and played to play, not for money and fame.

Most of the people on this site probably have absolutely no idea who Charlie Parker was.

I would say yes, possibly. This could be true for other Jazz musicians of the time also because they were taking the style into new and progressive areas, experimenting with strange and unique scales. To the inexperienced listener it sounds like chaos.
