1st you can do the x

4x + 2y = 98 --------- 1
4x = 98 - 2y
x = 98 -2y / 4

Then... you can replace the x into the question

4 (98-2y/4) + 2y = 98
98 -2y +2y =98
98 = 98

y =98

Bazzmc is right -- with only one equation, you can solve for either variable in terms of the other, but you won't get a purely numeric answer for either x or y.

For instance, to solve for x, we need to take steps to isolate x on one side. Let's start by subtracting 2y from both sides:

4x = 98 - 2y

Then, we divide both sides by 4:

x = 98/4 - 2y/4

Simplifying,

x = 49/2 - y/2

or x = (49 - y) / 2

You can solve the original equation for y in a similar way. Hope that helps!

You need to make a T chart, X on one side and Y on the other. You pick a number to be X, for example 1. Then you plug the 1 in for the X in the equation and you solve for Y. It should look like 4(1) + 2y =98, 4+ 2y =98, then you subtract 4 from 98. 2y =94. then you divide 94 by 2 and you get 47 for y. And that is it.

there are two way s to approach a problem like this...

1) you need another equation of x and y ... if you have that then you solve them simultaneously and the answer is A point where the two lines intersect.

2) you play the guessing game. you guess a X value and then calculate an y (or guess a Y and calulate an X) usually it is called a T chart something like this

X ( guess)............................... Y (calculate)
0................ then 2y=98, y = 98/2, y= 49
-1................then -4 +2y =98, 2y= 98+4, 2y=102, y=102/2, y=51
1.................the 4 +2y =98, 2y=98-4, 2y = 94, y=94/2, y= 47

so possible answers are (0, 49),(-1,51),(1, 47) the list of possibilities is endless

4x + 2y = 98

2y = -4x + 98 (Divide each by 2)

y= -2x + 49

y = -2(4)+ 49
y= -8 + 49
y=41

4x + 2(41) = 98

4x + 82 = 98

4x = 98-82

4x = 16 (Divide each by 4)

x = 2

2y = 98 - 4x

y = 49 - 2x

4x = 98 - 2y

x = 24.5 - .5y

This is an equation for a line, and doesn't have a unique solution.

You can re-formulate in the following way:

y= -2x + 49

When this line is graphed, it gives you a graphic representation of all the combinations of X & Y that are solutions to the equation.

The number of solutions is infinite. You need a second equation. The single equation is that of a line, going on forever in two directions with an infinite number of points comprising the line. Each point is a solution.

Solve For X And Y

That equation has two unknowns. You need a second equation to solve for both x and y. Otherwise, you have to solve for x in terms of y, or for y in terms of x.
