The best chance you have of REDUCING shrinkage would be to wash the item in cold water, by hand, and hang it to dry. Cotton fibers are very curly by nature in their raw state and are stretched for weaving. The more the cotton is washed, especially at hotter temepratures, the more the fibers will contract back to their natural state, thus the shrinkage. If you can afford it, dry clean the item to retain its original condition and shape.

the best way is to wash the garment by hand with a gentle liquid soap then rinse it well in cold water. Lay flat on a towel to then roll it so the towel will get the excess water. Put it on a nice clothing hanger making sure to flatten any wrinkles..this way it should prevent any shrinking.

Good news, bad news, no news!
ALL fabrics shrink 3 to 5 percent minimum.
Least shrinkage on a a cotton shirt is to have it professionally
laundered and ironed.
Minimize the electric or gas or automatic drying--that really bumps it up to major shrink-city.
Line dry when possible.
Good luck, and welcome to my world!

If it's 100% common try washing it in cold water and don't put it in the dryer. Lay it out to dry.
If it's got some polyester in it wash the same and put in dryer.
