Yes, many grocery stores carry dry ice for sale to ordinary people....it is not even that expensive, perhaps about $1.50 per pound, sold in 5 pound bags.
It would be kept is a heavy-duty freezer somewhere, you might have to ask employee for it if it is not in plain sight somewhere, it would not be in the frozen foods.

It is not really practical to make dry ice yourself, but it is not impossible. You could use this,

Never heard of getting it from a grocery store but Party themed stores like - Party America or Diddams usually carries something like that as well as Party rental stores that rent plates, glasses etc it shouldn't be too hard to find this time of year espescially since we're creeping up on Halloween in a few months. You can also try the science dept at your nearest college or university. A friend of mine got hers from the biology dept when she needed some for the champagne fountain for her wedding.

I'm not sure where my husband got the dry ice, but he would bring it home and "play with it" with my young boys. The boys are now grown up and one is a chemical engineer major in college. If you play with it know what you are doing as it can be dangerous.

You can get dry ice from an Ice Company. I've used it for Halloween parties. It's very dangerous though. You have to be careful how you handle it or it can burn right through your skin.

Grocery stores in our area do not carry it. Strangely enough, ice companies do. Check the yellow pages for ice.
