Hi there.
u forgot to mention Os u are running.
anyway, in my view best solution is use backup software(given link below). u could backup ur needed data to the CD or DVD(up to ur Rom) without using 3rd party DVD burning software.

Getting an external or internal extra hard drive will save your files IF you know what and where they are?

You'll have to reinstall all your programs so get the install disks and serial numbers.

Backup any licenses for software, music etc.

Back up your mail files.

Back up your profile settings, destop etc.

Take a long time to look through your computer. You might want to use a 'image program like the latest Ghost where you can go back and browse the files and restore individual files. You might want to restore the whole computer.

This iss a real pain you are untaking so take your time and even if you decide not to or fix the speed issue, do the Norton Ghost backup. It is REALLY nice to get get just one file from a backup without restoring the whole backup.

From now on, keep track of licensing, serial numbers, install programs and put all your 'stuff' underjust a couple of directoried and make sub-directories for EVERYTHING else. This will make moving to another computer easier.

When I help other, I do the Ghost option AND new PCs have such bigger hard drives, I just copy everything into a sub-folder called 'Old_PC'.

A trick to help find stuff is to search your drives with the wildcard '*.*', which means all files in IBM land. Once you have ALL files listed, sort them by date so you can see what is newer.

This will help you find many files you forgot about.

I have invested in a small flash drive. Apacer, with 256 mb memory. I have moved about 190 floppies to it and it's really easy to use. About the size of a thin bic lighter and plugs into USB port.

If you have a cd burner then you can put them on a cd.

Good Luck

p.s. Don't forget you can also put them on floppies if you have a floppy drive

I'm assuming you have a CD or DVD burner on the laptop. Use it to back up the files.

there's a fashion in which you could shutdown countless the startup classes, because what you're saying about the 20 minutes startup seems to point on to that. To disable the startup classes (that are the icons which load up down through the clock) purely flow to commence>>Run>>type in "msconfig.exe">>flow to the Startup tab and then flow through the record, disabling those you do not desire. i'm assuming that through the targeted visitor account you're nevertheless in a position to get admission on your documents purely through going to My computer>>C force>>documents And Settings>>choose Account and then backing them up in case you sense a reinstallation of living house windows XP is extremely mandatory. I could also talk about that the disabling of startup classes could be executed on your account. i'd noticeably recommend also downloading a loose secret agent ware scanner mutually with Spybot search for and ruin and Adaware, both one in each of which will search for your pc for something untoward mutually with stuff think ofyou've got picked up from the internet. Please see the source for the web pages to receive those classes from. If that would not remedy your situation, it can be properly worth quickly taking the songs off purely to ensure if it makes a distinction. some questions.... How a lot not ordinary force area do you've very last? What antivirus application are you operating? EDIT: I have in no way heard of Avast in view that i'm from the united kingdom yet i'd also advise attempting AVG loose version. it extremely works in only a similar way as different anti-virus application and updates on a daily basis and is not an ordeal version so that you'll keep it for see you later as you want.
