What do you think of cars having EDRs (Even Data Recorders), which are very similar to being a 'black box' which are used in commercial airliners?

All modern vehicles have "EDR's", this is nothing more then a fancy name for the ECM (Engine Control Module). I personally don't see what the problem is... this information is only used in severe accidents, usually when someone dies.
The Data is actually very vague... It tells investigators when and how long the brakes were applied, how quickly the vehicle slowed down, your speed prior to the accident, etc...

Also... the average mechanic garage can not retrieve all this information. You need the special software which only people with authority have. I was a GM Dealer mechanic for many years, and the dealer scan tool can not retrieve all the info.

EDR's have been around for a while, and I am ambivalent about them. G.M. began installing them about 5 years ago in a pilot program.
They have the potential for being a good thing, but like anything else, can be abused, and a really oily lawyer could make a case for the driver going to sleep when in reality, nothing of the sort occured.
AND anything that is put in place can be manipulated by anyone with a bit of time and know-how.
Over all--- I think it is just one more instance of Big-Brother. But then all of the available sources of observation could be classified that way.
SOOO--if you ain't doin' nothin' wrong, ya got nothin' ta worry 'bout! (I guess)

People who almost NEVER speed or drive recklessly have no problem with them.

It's like cameras at intersections. No problem for ME, as I NEVER run red lights.
