I am a huge fan of US basketball. However, do not be mistaken, this is not the Olympic team. Many people are confused by this. These players have committed to a 4 year program starting this year, the FIBA World Championships. FIFA World Cup was this year, so is the FIBA basketball championships. We have 24 people who are committed to this 4 year program which include the 2006 FIBA World Championships, 2007 World Championships of the Americas, and the 2008 Olympics. Our roster now will NOT be for the Olympics I gurantee you. Players that are on the team but not competing this year include, but are not limited to:
Kobe Bryant
Shawn Marion
Chauncey Billups
Paul Pierce
Adam Morrison
JJ Redick
Greg Oden
Luke Ridnour
Amare Stoudamire
and others I have forgotten. Bryant, Marion, Billups, and Pierce were left off the team for the World Championships all due to different reasons (surgery, personal, etc). Our Olympic team may look really different than our current competing roster for FIBA this year.
Now having cleared that up, I love our team. I believe it is the right mix of stardom, role players, athleticism, and dominance to dominate the world. I expect nothing less of 1st place here at the tournament. We have a unique team that is reestablishing the US dominance in basketball, and if we can continue to work together and play hard, will put the US far above everyone else.

There a great young team and I do think that Coach K is a genius. He put together teams with players of a true posistion. Like the reason Wade, Carmelo and Lebron dont all start is because neither of them are true point guards. If it was 04 they all would have started but Coach put Lebron, Melo and a real point guard Chris Paul who is anything but selfish, I have never seen anyone pass first better than him. Than they have all the players who can do all the essentials. Howard Rebounding Machine. Lebron, Melo great scorers and fast break and Battier, I thought he was a bumb in the NBA but he is an amazing hustle player
There is better team chemistry. For one reason most of them are young so they may have played in college together either on same team or opponents. Many have said that everyone gets along on the team. You can see it in the games they have played.
Two of the players that have suprised me are one Battier who I thought was terrible and I was furious when I heard he made it but he got picked becase he played for Duke and Coach K was the coach. But he hustles he dives for the ball all the time he takes charges he runs up and down the court on defense, he even can shoot an open three. But the most shocking player is my man Carmelo. He was a good player last year but he was no way near close to Wade and James because of his 2nd year dissapearance in talent. But in the championships there is no doubt that he is the best player on that team and im shocked that he is doing what he is doing.
And to the guy who said that this isnt the real Olympic team what are you talking about yes four players are not there but some of the players you named Adam Morrison Greg Oden Luke Ridnour Amare Stoudamire they all got cut and Shawn Marion's spot is not guaranteed he probably wont make it.
The players who will make it that arent there are Kobe, Billups, Pierce, Gilbert Arenas who you forgot eventhough he is one of the best guards in the NBA and probably J,J Reddick because he is a pure shooter and he played for Duke.
The best part about the U.S team is the balance between the lineups. The starting Squad isnt much better than the second squad and sometimes is worse like in the China Game where Dwayne and second squad went crazy. So their game plan is to tire the other team and when there tired bring 5 new players to exhaust them even more and it is working.
America should win because they have the best team but the defending olymipcs Champs look strong now having Manu Ginobli and Chicago start Andre Nociono should be a team that could be competitve.

I think this is getting off on the right foot. Young stars who haven't developed the big egos yet. Bosh, Wade and LeBron are big to huge stars, and are all very level-headed and modest.
And they all had to make a commitment, so this team will have chemistry that will carry over. I would be surprised with the talent, and more importantly, the maturity, to win easily. The young ones can be a team, instead of islands of individuals, so they are much more mature than the last few teams.

This team is certainly better than the (Bronze medal winning) Olympic team from 2 years ago. Are we good enough to win the Gold this year? Yes. But it isn't certain. Spain and Argentina can both give us a run for our money.

i think they're playing just as i thought they would. i'd still pick them to win gold but i also expect a lot of ugly wins. they will struggle with the international game and their dominating days are simply over(more like two years ago)...
did you say the olympic team? that team is still not formed although the pool of 24 players selected earlier remain intact. mike k will still be the coach and i think bryant, billups and pierce are shoo-ins for that team. if they really want to win the basketball olympics, they cant afford to invite back mediocre players like bowen and hinrich...
