Don't get me wrong, I love Zeppelin more than my parents. But to say that they did it by themselves would just be naive. The phrase heavy metal was first used in a Rolling Stone write up of a Led Zeppelin show. So to anyone that doubts whether Led is metal or not...They are the reason the those words were ever put together in a sentence. But never forget Sabbath. Honestly, where would this world be without Ozzy and company?

As I recall Deep Purple got heavy metal going. Zeppelin wasn't called heavy metal at the time

I thought that heavy metal had gone the way of disco. 70s disco= 2000s dance music, club mix etc... 70-80s heavy metal = hard rock. But Zeppelin a heavy metal band? Progressive rock? hm mm labels

Not even close. Zeppelin is a terrible band and I'm sorry to say that great bands like Metallica, Def Leppard and others would still have existed with or without Zeppelin.

Zepplin is awesome, but they're not heavy metal (regardless of how Rolling Stone described their show -- Rolling Stone borrowed the phrase from Steppenwolf anyway). If I were into labels, I would say they were Blues-based Rock. In any case, let's just say we're both big fans of theirs, and their music has withstood the test of time...
