Dating, in fact most courtship and marriage behavior, reflects the historical notion of women as property. A man had to prove to the womam's father that he could support the woman in the style to which she had become accustomed. He had to display sufficient financial resources to purchase the bride.
There is also the notion that women test men to determine whether they would be good providers. Can they afford to pay for good restaurants? Theatre tickets? That sort of thing. Women who are shopping for a mate would like to be assured that the mate has enough resources to support any offspring.
