Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, by Robert C. O'Brien
Gorgeous book.
Edit: Because Mikah's spelling is atrocious! Also, the movie based on the book was called "The Secret of Nimh".

By the way, NIMH stands for the National Institute of Mental Health, where the rats had been kept in a lab for a while.

first book in the series was Mrs. Frisbee and the Rats of Nimh. there were subsequent books in the series as well: Rasco and the Rats of Nimh; R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of Nimh, etc.
The Secret of NIMH is the movie adaptation of Mrs. Frisbee and the Rats of Nimh.

Nymph?? Don't know if I spelled that right, but sound it out and see if it works. I've never read it, just heard bout it,so you can never know. Actually, I think The Rats of Nymph had more in it's title. Oh well. Who knows? I might be right.
