Bugee cord the lid on. Pour some ammonia around outside of can.

Put the garbage in your car, but then they might get in there and I have no idea how to keep small animals out of cars.

Pour a little javex over the garbage and tying it down wouldn't hurt either.

Newer ones have handles which hold the lid in place when folded upward. These apparently cause less trouble for lazy garbagemen and won't result in poisonings.

cap them tightly

bungee cord them to a stationary object; eg tree, pole
