I've been at my job for a little over a year, but it's getting kind of lame duck for me, I make pretty good money (75k) , but I want to move up, or start my own biz. Should I stay here longer and pay off my student loans, save up some more, or I dunno what do you think?

While jumping around is not as bad of a thing as it used to be (when people stayed with companies for 30 years- in the same position), if you can stay for at least 2 years, that would probably be best.

As someone else indicated, you might start to manage your career there more aggressively. Go to your manager and see how you can take on more responsibility. If you have a review or performance standard and are meeting/exceeding it then you have a pretty good case. Point to what you have accomplished and talk about the next steps.

The key wil be knowing those next steps before you go in. Talk to a lot of people around you to find out the possibilities- even if they are a long shot or would require some work on the part of your manager (that's what he/she is there for). Like anything where you are asking for something for you, have your plan ready but be able to adjust if necessary.

Talk to people in other departments or parts of your department and see if there is something else you can do (that makes sense, of course). Unless you are in a really limited job, there is usually more to learn and master than can typically be done in a year. Back to the review point above- does your company think you have mastered your job yet?

Take your time and figure it out. Worst case is you wind up spending two years there- which would be good for your resume if the job is a good one - and then you can use the "learned al I could learn" line and move on - on your terms and with greater confidence you are going somewhere better.

Can you talk with your boss and see if he will give you something more challenging at work? He/She may see that as a sign that you are willing to work and will give you more demanding work and/or more responsibility. You are making really good money - honestly, I would work there until your loans are paid off and you have a good amount saved up for your own business.

Talk to your boss and work out something more challenging. 75k is way above average, don't ditch the job until you save enough money to keep the business running for five years.

Keep your eyes open for your next step. Network like mad. Talk to your boss and see if there's anything down the road for you. Get into a position where you can walk if you need to, but don't burn any bridges. Only you know what's right for you. Good luck
