My father passed away last week. I agree that it is a distraction. Plus it makes me sad every time I see one. The grieving families should go to the cemetary, its peaceful and tranquil. RIP Dad

I understand your asthetic call for cleanliness but sometimes there needs to be way for people to grieve. Many people can't come to terms with the death of a loved one and actually going to the site of the tragedy allows them to feel some sort of connection when they otherwise feel like the world has just closed in around their ears. Roadside memorials should not stay up indefinately as they tend to just become trashy (especially those that are made up of stuffed animals, flowers and random tokens) A simple marker I think has the staying power to remain up indefinately - these things are plain but still evoke the love to a lost friend or love.
I think it is up to the placer of such items to either remove them when they can conquer the grief or place things that are more disposable by natural means - a single flower will eventually decomposed and rejoin the soil around it. If you love someone enough to place a token in memorial then they should also care enough that the space where their loved one passed not become yet another place of deposited trash.
As for a distraction, yes and no. Yes it takes your eyes off of the road for a moment, but what it does for me is remind me of the immense responsiblity I am weilding by driving a car. Hopefully others will also make that mental correlation. You are responsible for your actions and should be vigilant in staying focused on your task at hand.

It can be a distraction. They should probably be removed after a few months. After all the decedents are not there. They are probably interred somewhere else. I used to think it was good to leave them there so you would be cautious if it was a dangerous curve or something but it could also serve to detract you from your driving and cause another accident. And some of them are so faded and old and falling apart that they are a blight on the landscape.

I do understand the distraction factor but people deal with grief differently and at differ ant time periods. To some, markers are a tribute to the loved one that was lost. I say if it helps the family deal with their grief let them have that! Sometimes it may help remind the rest of us to help prevent traffic accidents and also how fortunate we are that is not one of our loved ones.

I think loved ones need the closure by putting a memorial but agree that after a limited time it should be respectfully taken down. It can be a distraction to driving but let the family grieve then remove it.

here in my area there are alot of the markers along strt 24....true they are an eyesore after awhile but at the same time they serve as a reminder to other drivers that the highway has taken many lives....around here strt 24 running from Toledo Ohio to Ft.Wayne Indiana the truck drivers call it Death Highway

No I do not agree. Not to long ago in my town an elderly women turned the wrong way on the highway and killed a women and her unborn child. There is a marker and a pink teddy bear where they died. I always want to see it there. It reminds us to be careful, that we never know what is going to happen. That if you do not watch what you are doing, you never know who you are going to hurt.

No I don't think so, only if you lost someone close to you could you understand . And maybe all you drivers out there will take a note of that
site and be careful it dosen't happen to you.

I think it should be up to the family of the lost loved one
as to when & if they should be removed
there are also alot of other things on the rd. that can be distracting, so I don't think this is bad, they need to
mourn the loss & if this helps them do so then
so be it

Yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly!! That's what cemetries are for.I also find it difficult explaining their purpose to my 5 year old without scaring him. They definately should not be allowed.
