I'm about to buy a 1997 range rover 4.0 and from what my mechanic says... it runs smooth. But I wanted to know from someone who has knowledge of range rovers to tell me how long do they typically last (mileage wise) if maintained well?

Thanks

first, the 1997 model is one of the least reliable in my opinion.
second, they should last a long time depending on the way you treat it.
third, Range Rovers are the worst in Consumer satisfaction ratings.
fourth. I work for a Land Rover/Range Rover Dealer.
fifth, search for a diffrenet model year Range Rover but not a brand new one, So far they are the worst.
sixth. I work for Range Rover and Drive other Brand Vehicles. Do not get me wrong, Not all of them are bad, But all of them have problems, from electrical problems to interior panels falling off for no reason, to transfercase failures, front axle failures, air suspension failures, cracked engine blocks because of minor engine overheating etc etc
Get a BMX X5 or similar if you want to spend the kind of money your going to spend on the Range Rover.

1997 overall was a good year for Land Rovers, but having owned one, I'd give you the same advice that the President of Land Rover NA gave me when I was about to purchase one of his products: "There are better and more reliable vehicles with the same capabilities at a lower cost than the Range Rover."

Unless you are willing to live with the (high) probablility of having to part with many thousands of dollars for repairs on short notice, or are a masochist, buy a GMC/Chevy Suburban if you just have to have a 4x4. If you want something that looks good and drives well, too, buy a BMW X5, or a Toyota/Lexus Land Cruiser. Any of these will be sufficient for the average occasional off-road user. You'll be able to take the money you save and buy yourself a weekend sports car after a few years of owning one of these compared to the Rover.
