the number of alarms is the number of different fire stations that have been called to battle the blaze.
so a 5 alarm fire is so big that fire trucks from 5 different fire stations have had to be called in to fight it.
so it sort of varies from place to place. a one alarm fire near a large fire station with plenty of trucks and men may be the same size as a three-alarm fire that is located by several smaller stations.

None of these people know anything at all.. That's not what a "5 alarm" fire means at all, it's not the rule for the numbering system. There are one-alarm, 2-alarm, 3-alarm fires, and so on.. These days the term "multi-alarm" fire is used. Nor does it mean the number of stations that are called to battle a blaze, although some cities may use a number of firehouses to respond to multi-alarm designations, however the number of alarm does not indicate the number of stations responding..For example a three alarm fire means that there was a serious accident, such as someone is severely injured or dead. Even a single firehouse can combat a 5-alarm fire.

Alarm rating goes by how many units/firefighters respond. It has nothing to do with different stations or how many people call or how many alarms go off. The NY City Fire Department rates a 2 alarm at 25 units and 106 firefighters respond and a 3 alarm 33 units and 138 firefighters respond. And so on and so forth. Google "Fire alarm rating"

5 alarms mean the number of engine companies responding to an incident. The greater the alarm, the greater the fire. At least I think that's the way I remember it. How high it goes depends on the incident itself. Sometimes fire departments will call in mutual aid from surrounding areas if they don't have enough manpower or equipment.

I've never heard of a five-alarm fire - that would be very serious. I think each alarm is used to call fire trucks to the scene. The first alarm brings one or two trucks, then if more help is needed, a second alarm calls more trucks, and so on.

The number of fire houses asked to respond to the fire. If five stations respond, there were "five alarms".
