Foods that are high in potassium since you need to replenish this mineral when you run. Some good examples are figs, bananas, and avocados. These fruits also provide you with carbs and vitamins. Bagels with peanut butter are great for runners because you are combining complex carbs with protein. Many runners eat a lot of oatmeal. Eat fish (especially Salmon,) a few times a week. Before workouts, eat GU or some other energy gel as you will get carbs and minerals from these as well as a little caffiene to help you burn fat as fuel. During training runs, drink Ultima, Endurox or Cytomax instead of water. These drinks have the vitamins and minerals that you lose when you sweat and also contain carbs. Good luck and have a great season!

40% of your calories should come from carbs, 30% from protein, and 30% from fat. Check out the Zone diet. Originally it wasn't a weight loss diet, it was a high performance diet for athletes. The weight loss version just dials back on the portion sizes.
The types od carbs, fats, etc are just as important as the amounts and the ratio. That's why you need read one of the books. I recommend "Enter The Zone", by Dr. Barry Sears.

When I ran cross country I ate a TON of complex carbs. Stuff like pasta, bran, oatmeal, potatoes, wheat, etc. Food that gives you a lot of energy and isnt full of simple carbs - which essentialy make you fat.
