Tampons are very bad for vaginal health, commercial tampons such as Tampax are the most harmful out of over twenty different menstrual options and the only menstrual options to have caused and contributed to deaths. Tampon risks include TSS, vaginal splitting, bacterial infections, yeast infections, fibre loss, chemical exposure, prevention of normal vaginal cleaning functions, increased menstrual cramps, increased menstrual flow, etc.
It is down to personal choice but I would suggest looking at all the issue involved, health is the main issue but there are also matters of environmental risks, cost and social taboos, there is a lot of politics and history that I'd not expect anyone to look into but it is certainly a lot more than 'tampons or pads'.
Side note - why are you only choosing between tampons or pads, you have a lot of different options and it is important you know them all as well as health risks and other issues involved.
Different menstrual options;
Commercial tampons
Organic tampons
Soft tampons
Sponge tampons
Homemade tampons
Commercial pads
Organic pads
Cloth pads
Homemade pads
Padettes
Padded panties
Rubber bell-shaped menstrual cups
Silicone bell-shaped menstrual cups
Diaphragms as menstrual cups
Homemade menstrual cups
Softcups
Free-flow
Free-flow layering
Free-flow instinctive
Extraction
Other (such as period blanket or toilet paper).

Either one will do the trick (usually). Personally I use both because if you have a heavy period and you are only wearing a tampon, it could easily leak and that isn't exactly the best way to go anywhere. On the other hand pads are good alone for the TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) which could happen to you so be advised but it is extremely rare so don't worry too much. If using tampons, the smaller the better in the TSS case. Playtex is a good tampon and just about any brand for pads. Choose wisely.

PAds!!! I say this because tampons can cause toxic shock syndrome and some other problem I for got about. Research. I used tampons 1 time and I have never used them again because I never went on date and I only went to the prom and I would have worn a tampon then if I was on my u know what. Now use them only when you have a formal or a date with a REAL MAN. But alot of things are bad for our bodys but yet we still do them like certain foods we eat can kill us slowly but we still eat them. Research and you will get the best answer. GO to a search engine and type in tampon or pads and you can get help that way too

I prefer tampons. I feel cleaner and drier. They also help if you get odor when your on your period. My Tampon of choice is Kotex Security. Their comfortable, easy to insert, and don't leak. However, it's advisable to wear a panyliner for back-up. There also good for when your working out or going swimming and their easy to dispose of.
I do sometimes like to use pads when I want a break from the Tampons. Usually when I'm chillin' at home. Always super thinw/wings.

Honestly, pads are more healthy. Depending upon the pad you use, you have to change them very often and they do not leave you, physically, very clean. On the other hand, tampons are great other than if you leave them in for too long you could get toxic shock syndrome.

I use both. It depends on the activity what I choose to use.
For tampons I've found Tampax Pearl very comfortable and for pads I use Stayfree.

I prefer to us Tampons, just because they always protect me, then if i wear pads, and i don't feel like everyone can see my pad...lol. I have been using O.B. tampons for over 10 years and they never have failed me and are comfortable!!

Pads are good to use at night or when ur flow is very heavy. Tampons are okay for regular and light. Just amke sure to take it out at night and change it every couple of hours.

Tampons, Less likely to leak but someetimes pads, but its gross to be sitting in your own blood. Just remember to change the tampons ever 6-8 hrs. Don't let the TSS scare you. the less absovancy you use the less likly the TSS case is. TSS is very rare, so just go with your incists
