The popular "mythical" explanation is that crop circles are either imprints or messages left by alien crafts that visit Earth. They've been appearing for centuries, and there are records in print of crop circles dating back to Pre-Revolutionary America (in those days they were explained as the work of Devil...).
The more common-sense explanation is that crop circles are made either by farmers or mischief minded teenagers - it can be done with a plank of wood or a rope with one person standing in the middle and another rotating the tool. There are also "crop circles" with fantastically complicated geometric designs, but they're usually explained in the same fashion.
There has also been some scientific speculation that crop circles have geological origins and are caused by subterranean magnetic activity. As far as I know, this is completely unverified.

Some say crop circles are imprints left on the ground after an alien ship has landed and taken off again. Others say they are patterns that have been layed out to tag certain locations.

Myth or fact? Some of them are quite elaborate. To answer your question, the myth is supposed to be that they were made by beings from another world. Why, no one knows.
