If you are using a PS/2 mouse (has a round plug), they are probably using the same PS/2 controller. So they cannot be used at the same time. If you unplug it, the computer is still looking for the external mouse. You have to reboot for the system to see the pad again. FYI, never unplug a PS/2 type mouse or keyboard while the computer is on. This can short out the port.

your laptop thinks that you're just using your external mouse for your 'mousing' so then it shuts off it's own touchpad. This happens to me but i dont worry about it. When i want to use my touchpad i just unplug the external mouse.

I had this concern and not one of the strategies right here labored for me. What did became into first making use of the keyboard's tab button (because of the fact i could no longer use the touchpad) to click on the initiating key (with the abode windows icon), making use of the arrow keys to get to settings, going from there to gadgets, mouse and touchpad, added mouse thoughts, ultimately gadget settings and from there clicking on "enable synaptics clickpad v1.4 on SMB Port." Touchpad began working agaim on the instant.

Is the touchpad enabled? Press Fn and look for a symbol that looks like a finger touching a box or something and press it. That should enable the touchpad.

If you are using PS/2 externally, this could be the problem, it wasn't designed to be (un)plug at will, I have USB externally so I can use both same time anywhere.
