If you knew (somehow) for sure that an impending nuclear war was going to soon occur, then how would you prepare for it (to try to survive through it)?

Here are some ideas:

1. go upwind at least 30 miles or more of all major cities or military installations to avoid the radioactive fallout.

2. bunkers and shelters will keep you safe from the radioactivity, but can you outlast the nuclear winter and radioactivity above ground?

3. stock up on 22 and shot gun shells (they're plentiful) the higher calibre will run out, facing the mobs trying to steel your food and water.

In a 2-megaton explosion over a fairly large city, buildings would be vaporized, people reduced to atoms and shadows, outlying structures blown down like matchsticks and raging fires ignited. And if the bomb were exploded on the ground, an enormous crater, like those that can be seen through a telescope on the surface of the Moon, would be all that remained where a city once had been.

The detonation of tens of thousands of nuclear weapons that now sit quietly, inconspicuously, in missile silos, submarines and long-range bombers, faithful servants awaiting orders would bring the end of the human species.

The World Health Organization concludes that 1.1 billion people would be killed outright in such a nuclear war, mainly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. An additional 1.1 billion people would suffer serious injuries and radiation sickness. This would represent by far the greatest disaster in the history of the human species and, with no other adverse effects, would probably be enough to reduce at least the Northern Hemisphere to a state of prolonged agony and barbarism.

Go camping about a far away from any population center as possible, or say "the heck with it" and ride it out at home ... of course, with the latter, there may not be any survival.

Store up as much water as possible, go to the store and buy as many big bags of beans and rice I could find, find a shelter--if you have a basement you can build a makeshift one quickly. Check out the website:

Nothing. I'm pretty much doomed, unless I flee north or south.

Start saying my prayers, because if anyone would survive, they would wish they were dead.
