The Witches by Roald Dahl.
The Lion , The Witch And The Wardrobe By CS Lewis.
Harry Potter books.
James and The Giant Peach.
Little Women by Louisa May Allcott
Horrible Histories books- I know these aren't fictional but they are an excellent read and a brilliant way to educate your child about history, my kids love reading them and they're far from dull.

The Big Friendly Giant, by Ronald Dahl, The Wind and Willows by Kenneth Graham, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien, and what about the first Harry Potter? Dont know if thats a bit scary but the first one was quite tame.

A lot of Enid Blyton books are good. She's known for her Famous Five books, but her Magic Farawary Tree and the Wishing Chair series are wonderful, too.

The Spiderwick Chronicles. I read them, and actually started to enjoy them.Of course start at book one, they are short books and could have been made into one larger book, but I think for marketing purposes they were divided.
Mr. Poppers Penguins, Everything on a Waffle ,The tales of Despereaux, No more Dead dogs ( all one kids I know really liked. but I never personally read)
