I would speak Pinta.

It is the dialect of giant tortoise language spoken on the Galapagos Island of that name.

There is only one living speaker of this language - 'Lonesome George', a huge male who is the last known survivor on Earth of the subspecies Geochelone nigra abingdonii.

George is about 80 years of age now, about middle-aged in giant tortoise terms.

There are no surviving females of his species.

So I would sit down with a tape recorder and talk to him, knowing that what was being recorded was no casual conversation, but destined, sadly, to be a piece of history.

This small island off the coast of Ecuador bore thousands of these giant tortoises before Man cleared away the vegetation and introduced alien species which destroyed very, very, very, very, very nearly all of them.

After what we've done, would George even speak to me?
