Has anyone been offered a free carpet cleaning, then discovered it was a sales call for Kirby Vacuum? I fell for the cleaning offer and, because of a "gut feeling", locked up all valuables in the house. It seemed like a deceitful and shady operation? Has anyone had a similar experience?

I actually sold Kirby's, It was one of the worst jobs I ever had, we had to tell people they won a free carpet cleaning, and then we would have to try to sell them a 2000 dollar vaccum. You shouldn't have fallen for the free cleaning, but I don't think they are there to rob you.

I never worked for Kirby, but I did spend about 6 years as a Division Serv. Mgr. for Electrolux, back in the early 80's. Most all of the door to door type vacuum sales companies will offer some sort of free enticement to prospective new customers in order to get them to watch a demo of the particular model they're pushing that month. Sometimes they call on the phone and set up appointments to get around local ordinances that ban door to door salespeople from canvassing neighborhoods at random. Where there are no such ordinances then often groups of young college kids, out for the summer travel around in vans and go out to canvass areas in two's or three's, trying to sell to anyone who will watch a demo. Sometimes they offer a roll of paper towels, sometimes a flashlite, or other small trinket to get in the door. Once in, it depends on the integrity of the person or persons whether they do a proper demo and leave if you say not interested, or if they stay on into the evening trying to high pressure you into buying. We had representatives who worked both ways, some, usually the older, more mature people seemed to be more reliable, the younger ones more flighty, The vacuums are usually of good quality, but also usually way overpriced. You just have to be careful not to buy something you don't want.

The Kirby people always offer a free carpet cleaning. They will try to sell you the vacuum cleaner, of course, but the carpet cleaning is free. I bought a Kirby a few years ago and LOVE it. I will never go back to a regular vacuum cleaner.

I actually got hired on by them once, and could not work for a company that crooked. They would get me on the phone and try to get every penny out of some old person, or couple barely getting by and persuade them how this machine would change their lives. NO NO NO NO NO, could not do it, will not do it. I quit very quickly.
