I would say a great major at a so-so university is more important because in the end it's about how much you learned and how prepared you are for your future. Alot of times those "great" universities are heavily impacted because everyone wants to go there so they're at max capacity making it hard to serve the individual student. The best thing to do no matter what situation you end up in is to make sure you build a working realtionship/ friendship with a faculty member. They can champion for you when you need it (i.e. reccommendation letters, special exceptions, etc.).

I worked for 15 years at a major research university in the SE and IMO students from the neighboring state institutions were just as well prepared in many fields if not better prepared. If you plan on entering a competitive graduate school program upon completion of your undergraduate degree, in that case it can be somewhat adventageous to come from a premiere university where the academics may be perceived as more stringent.

So i suggest universities that offer the best knowledge about research in your area is critical to your success too. They offer the best teachers too when they are funded well by private companies.

Take the microsoft example. .. They fund lots of projects with the University of Waterloo because waterloo teaches their students the latest and greatest tools that are needed at microsoft.
