You should not allow yourself too become to scared to sing in front of the director.. You say you are a good actor so you must have experience auditioning.
I have acted in several musicals and I don't think my voice is anything to shout about. I just relax my throat and body and ACT the song. Believe me, any good director will prefer a decent actor who can hold a note than a great singer who can't act!
Good luck.

Don't feel obligated to sing a song from the show you're trying out for, unless you are specifically asked to. Just sing a song you feel comfortable with from another musical, if you really like the way you sing it. Be prepared with two -- maybe a funny one and a slower, romantic one.

Know which key you sing best in and ask the piano accompanist (if there is one) to play it in that key. Otherwise, it might be somewhat of an unpleasant surprise when your voice doesn't match the piano.

Smile, be polite and enthusiastic. Singing is also about acting. After the audition and any comments the judges make, thank them and smile again. Don't try to defend yourself, make excuses, bring up other singers performances or whine. Listen to what people have to say and thank them for their observations, even if the comments are hard to take.

I just finished appearing in the musical "Once Upon a Mattress", and if you think you can't sing, I am deaf. But as there are parts in every musical that require little to no singing - or only singing with the chorus - you should still try out. They always need good actors.

And yes, I did sing in the muscial - part of the chorus and a one line solo (ala Rex Harrison where I spoke in time to the music). And relied on the conductor's baton and my partner to pull off all five dances. So if I can do, so can you!!

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a show that requires a pretty large cast, so, even if you think your voice isn't good enough, your chances of being cast are still good.

A very easy audition song for people who consider themselves 'non-singers' is I Enjoy Being A Girl from the musical Flower Drum Song.

Best of luck at your audition!

When my college did "Pippin," the biggest problem our musical director had was getting people to sing so that others could hear them. A director is going to be loath to pick someone who can sing but won't project their voice. What's the use of a gorgeous voice in a musical if the audience can't hear a single word? Break a leg!

Last year, my theater class did Annie, and a lot of the people were good actors, but they needed a little work on the singing, but they did their best, and thew whole thing turned out great. Just practice your singing a lot.Plus, if you do a really good job on the acting part, they may pick you for that. Break a Leg!!

Acting is very important in a musical as well as singing. Just practice at home and pick an easy audition song and just do your best!!! If you plan on being in more musicals, you could take voice lessons.

Great show! Go in there and do you're best! Take voice lessons, dance, and acting lesons! You'll be a real triple threat and get great roles! If you were an idiot than all those big stars on Broadway are too!

And I don't like being called an idiot! --LOL!
