Why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?
Use your laptop on your lap. As long as it doesn't get too hot it should be fine.

They were called laptops before anyone thought that was a problem. Actually I'm sitting here with it on my lap. Just be aware of how hot it feels. I have a piece of plate glass with polished edges. I set it on that, because I think the glass will disperse the heat. Mine is just warm, not hot at all, and it's a Dell! But I don't leave it unattended on wood or fabric or papers!

A majority of laptops do fir comfortably on your lap. There are some laptops out there that are called desktop replacements that are more bigger and are used to have desktop quality wherever you go.
They still should be called laptops though because most of them fit on your lap. If it bothers you, you can just call them notebooks.

Yes, the real issue is about ventilation. However, the only real problem (other than for the computer) is theoretically a male health issue. According to some research, men who spend great amounts of time with their "notebook" computers on their laps are more likely to suffer from infertility. This is due to the heat produced by the computer.
