My sister is also trying to iron on some patches to her son's bookbag. Of course you need to just "iron it on..." BUT if there is no iron on backing on the patch it obviously won't stick. You can purchase a backing at a fabric store.

You may also want to seal it so that it does not peel off. Some people stitch the edges, there is also a sealant that you can purchage. Again check a local fabric store.

Place the patch on desired spot of application and iron it for about a minute.

IRON THEM ON... that's why they are called "iron on" you just put them where you want it and set your iron to the hottest and then put the iron over the patch and wha-la it should work!
