i had the mirena iud put in about 7 months ago, and about 3 months ago started having very bad cramps almost every day... i also started to have heavy bleeding again every two weeks... i had the iud put in to help these problems, and it did for a short amount of time. should i have the iud removed?

I would strongly recommend you see your practice nurse or return to the clinic where you had the merina inserted. A high vaginal swab and endocervical swab is required to eliminate the possibility of infections. Also, the coil string should be checked to ensure it is still in place and has retracted into the cervix. Please get this checked out a.s.a.p!

IUD's are 'supposed' to affect the quantity of bleeding not the quality. That means that most doctors believe they generally do not cause irregular periods. On a more individual level, however, they actually do. I would recommend having it removed and discussing a alternative way of attaining regular menses. Irregular menses have been linked to and indicative of serious problems if left unchecked. See your doctor.

Can't remember which one I had, but I had the same trouble with one and had to have it removed. Hence 18 year old daughter and hubby's snip! Sorry! Contraception can be a real pain though, can't it.
