Part of the cellar of the house I moved into is not accessible. There is a chirp every 2 - 4 minutes from inside the space I can't get to. I think the chirp is from a smoke detector that has a dying battery in it. I have been waiting for more than a year for the chirping to stop but it hasn't stopped yet. I can look over the wall and see under part of the enclosed space but I can't see all of the space this way. What can I do if I don't want to tear up the floor in the room above?

Are you sure that it is a smoke alarm? That sounds like an alarm panel that doesn't have phone voltage going to it. This is what they do when the phone line is cut off to it. Do you have an alarm panel in your house that you don't use? If that is the case, more than likely you can remotely turn it off from that panel. I hope this helps!

It sounds like a smoke detector with a dead battery that is chirping because it has A/C power ran to it.
What you could do is isolate the wire feed to the detector and disconnect it. This actually would be a lucky break if it was the last connection in the circuit.
Try shutting off selected breakers until you can no longer hear the chirping. At least you will now know that it does have A/C power. Trace any wires leading to the area. Disconnect one by one until you have found the smoke detector feed.
Good luck and be careful.

If it is a smoke detector and it has A/C power going to it the battery is dead and as long as it is still installed it will continue to beep!(the battery is for backup power)You have no choice other than to get to it and disconnect the smoke detector.
