I work at a bank in Canada and we have CHEQUING accounts but in the US it is a CHECKING account. Does anyone know why there are two spellings for this word when they serve the same purpose?

Cheque is French and check is English-that's the only difference.

Check is a US spelling and Cheque is more British English.

my language is not english but i think that they differ in spelling because they have different meanings check means to how can i say to check sth to control sth but cheque is the thing that you deal with everyday in your bank

Us Americans use "check" since the "Q" is so hard to reach on our keyboards.

"Check" is the incorrect American way of spelling it.
