A state university is run by a specific state and the tuition is keep relativity low by funding of tax dollars.

A university is often private although not always the case. Some states fund a "university" system and leave off the the word "state" from its name. These often have a little higher admission fee and acceptance rate.

State universities are usually attached in some way to the state government and are partially paid for and governed by taxpayers. Just because a university's name doesn't say "state" in it does not mean it isn't a "state University." The California State system and the University of California are both public institutions with different levels of government from the state (UC's are land grant research institutions, a little different)

A state university is a public school primarily funded by a state government. This is in contrast to a private university, such as Notre Dame University. Private universities rely on grants, donations and tuition for funding. Public universities tend to cost a lot less than private universities.

State Universities are exactly that- universities sponsered and run by the state. Versus a Univeristy which is a private establishment. State Universities are often very good schools, but are cheaper and easier to get into than other schools.

A state university is a school that is ran and funded by the state. It is a public college. The others are private colleges. A state funded college is cheaper on your wallet. And despite what another person said state funded schools are not for rejects. There are tons of state funded schools that are excellent educationally.

In California, the 12-campus University of Calif system is focused on undergraduate education, graduate research and the professional schools (law, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine.) UC offers both Masters and Doctorate degrees at the graduate program levels. UC limits itself to accepting the top 12% of the graduating high school seniors.

The 25-campus California State University system is more broadly focused than the UC system. It is more 'practical' than research oriented. Many of the CSU campuses were targeted to educate California's next-generation of teachers. CSU offers extensive programs in education and provides the majority of teaching credentials in California. Other than in education, the CSU system offers very few, if any, PhD programs. Finally, the CSU system selects its students from the top 1/3 of high school seniors.

All of these requirements were spelled out in California's Master Plan for its unversity, college and community college systems, adopted in 1960.
