Why were the actresses portraying Mimi and Joanne replaced for the movie?

Daphne Rubin-Vega was pregnant.

Fredi Walker or the director felt that she was too old. Almost 10 years had passed between the opening of the show and the filming of the movie.

All I could think of is prior commitments or they looked too old.. I mean, not that the cast from the movie looked young but the one line where Mimi says "I'm 19, but old for my age..." ..Rosario didn't even pull it off so the original Mimi really wouldn't have.. and I'm guessing the Joann from the original cast and the 2 stage shows I've seen were heavier .. I mean, heaven forbid a heavy woman be on screen and intelligent ...

Economics perhaps. Scheduling maybe. Personalities often-times. And some actors and actresses prefer stage over screen.
