My brother has a lot more street cred than me. Once he told me, You look for good in people, but I look for what their angle is, what they really want regardless of what they say.

He was right about me and his assessment of himself. Street IQ is knowing the reality and knowing things are usually not what they seem. People rarely reveal their true feelings. They are not vulnerable, so if you can know what their true desires are without taking in consideration what they present to you and you can act on that and keep them copacetic with you, you gain that street smarts.

It won't come directly from books, but can be described in novels about people with street smarts. I'm thinking of noir detective novels. The hard-boiled detective who reads people and knows their true feelings with instinct.

How do you gain that instinct yourself? Observation and experience and remembering what you learn about human nature.

1) Join a street gang- preferrably from the south side.
2) Develop a crack habit.
3) Hang out with the guys who hang out just outside liquor stores and ask them questions about slangin rocks, how to properly beatdown some chump that tries to take your bed at the homeless shelter, and algebra.
4) Watch plenty of Shaft movies. Actually, any movie from the 70's will do. Just not Star Wars.
5) Watch old episodes of Full House and act exactly the opposite way they act.

I.Q. is I.Q., how you use it on the street depends on what you put in your head to start with. Once you have the science for logic pinned down and it use for scientific activity, then read the newspaper and entertainment media for what's now, then learn class ego and in group class relativity.

What ever you do, be true you and know what hurts the heart in the other, that may give you a heads up on the next action so you can duck yours.

Find a trusted buddy who is "street smart" and tag along with them for a while. They'll explain things to you and separate what you need to learn from what can be ignored or isn't a threat.
Sorry. There isn't a booklet on the subject. Nothing but first-hand experience can teach this lesson. Anything less than prepared and someone's gonna bust a cap in you and take your bling-bling away.
