Gotta take it in to a garage. They can hook it up to a computer that will tell them why the light is on.

You didn't tell us what year, make or model. It can REALLY make a difference what we tell you.
That said:
That Service Engine Soon light isn't there to tell you to change the oil, it is the car's only means of telling you that the PCM (the car's computer) has identified a problem in one of the sensor or command circuits.
If you have some mechanical ability, you CAN go to Auto-Zone and ask them to identify the code for you, and see if they can tell you what it means. If they can't or seem a bit unsure, write the code down, and either buy the repair manual for the car from them (<$20.00), or if money is short, go to the library, and in the REFERENCE section, you can gleen all the information you need to repair your problem.
NOTE:----> The code that the PCM stores identifies the circuit or system in which the malfunction has been located, NOT necessarily the component.
If the code you get is "P0174, system too lean bank 2", it could mean that the O2 sensor is either sleepy or flat-line lean. But it could also mean that there is a restricted fuel filter, or a failing injector circuit.
So there must be some thought and serious diagnostics involved, or you may replace a component or two, and find that you still have the problem.
When you are at the library, ask if they have either ALLDATA or Mitchell On-Demand. These are Professional level resources, and in addition to being able to identify the codes and circuits, you can also check on Technical service bulletins, recalls, and diagnostic and repair trouble trees.

Good Luck

You need to find the problem that is causing it. It can be many things on cars with a computer. If you are fixing it yourself you can check the plugs, wires, filters and make sure the cooling system is good. Auto Zone may be of some help to you. They will haelp you with code reading.

Remove the bulb, or a little black electrical tape over the light seems to work too.
